Greetings Teachers,

Hope your year is off to a fantastic start. You will find the excerpts for the All-State Jazz and Show Choir auditions included in this email, as well as on the ACE website. This year our Jazz selections is an arrangement of a swing tune called “Mister Hooper’s Find It In a Minute Book.” Here is a link to download the PDF chart and MP3 demo:

Jeremy Fox, our Jazz Choir Clinician has selected an excerpt for us starting at measure 73 through 89. We have included the dropbox to a PDF of the chart because the excerpt is as written voice part, and in the event you wanted to practice it with your singers altogether, you will have that ability. Ryan Holder will be working with our Jazz Clinic Choir this year.

Paul Gulsvig and Kye Brackett will serve as our Show Choir Clinicians. For that audition we will be using Shut Up and Dance.

Auditions will once again be at Boulder Creek High School located at 40404 N. Gavilan Peak Blvd in Anthem on September 15th. Registration for the Jazz and Show Choirs are open and being collected until Friday, August 25th. Please list any conflicts any students may have on your form to avoid any schedule conflicts. If your student is selected, the Festival will take place at Horizon High School on November 15th-17th.

Our Jazz Choir Chairperson is Meg Foote
Jazz Clinic Choir Chairperson is Robin Neely
Show Choir Chairperson is Chris Hughes.
I am the of VP Jazz and Show activities.

Please let any of us know if you have questions.
All My Best,

Hello High School Choral Directors!

I would like to welcome you back from what was hopefully a relaxing summer. Let me be the first to encourage you to register your ensemble(s) in the Fall Choir Festival hosted by the Arizona Choral Educators. The festival is hosted in the Flagstaff, Tucson and Phoenix areas. The Flagstaff-area festival will be held on Monday, October 29th at Flagstaff High School, the Tucson-area festival will be held on Tuesday, October 30th at Catalina Foothills High School, and the Phoenix-area festival will be held on Thursday and Friday, November 1st and 2nd at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. This year your choirs will get to opportunity to work with some outstanding clinicians. Dr. Kevin Kriegel (from Glendale Community College) and Danya Tiller (from Phoenix Girls Chorus) will be adjudicating at our Flagstaff site, Dr. Miguel Felipe (from University of Arizona) and Dr. David Ashcraft (from University of Arizona) will be adjudicating at our Tucson site, and Dr. Charlene Archibeque (from San Jose State University) and Dr. John Byun (from Riverside City College) will be adjudicating at our Phoenix site. Some important information:

  • Scheduling is limited. Ensembles will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis. That being said, I will keep a live, in-progress schedule posted HERE so that you can see if there are viable time slots available before you register. Once you have registered you will be required to pay even if your assigned performance slot is not ideal. I will make every effort to facilitate all the ensembles and will publish a finalized schedule when registration is closed.
  • The sight reading exercises will be available in SSA, SA, TB, TTB, TBB, SAB, and SATB at the director’s discretion. These exercises have been provided by You can go HERE and create your own, free sight reading exercises for your choir to prepare! A reminder in regards to the 2-minute recap period after the first reading of the exercise. Students will be allowed to sing during these two minutes. They may sing individually or in sections, but cannot sing the exercise all together homophonically. Directors are still not allowed to sing other than the tonic triad and starting pitches.
  • We have aligned our adjudication process more closely with state standards and choral education goals. The new performance adjudication form will include numeric values for each of the ten evaluation criteria which will be added for a total point value, from which your rating will be determined. The sight reading adjudication form also has specific point values which will be awarded based on a detailed rubric. You can find these forms HERE if you would like to examine them further.
  • If you receive a Superior Rating, you are encouraged to submit a recording for the AMEA Conference. The AMEA Conference Performances will be February 1-2, 2019. Your recording must be submitted by November 10th to

Registration is now open on the Arizona AMEA website HERE. The registration deadline is September, 28th but there may be very limited time slots available if you wait to register. Please read your ACE handbook (also available at the AMEA website HERE) for complete details. If you have any questions you can email me at

2018 All-State Solo Audition

posted Mar 27, 2017, 9:28 AM by Darin Shryock   [ updated Mar 27, 2017, 12:11 PM ]

On March 20, 2017 at a regularly scheduled meeting of the ACE Board of Directors, the following policy was approved for the 2018 and 2019 All-State Auditions.  It will be presented to the AMEA Board of Directors with the recommendation that it be approved for the 2017 and 2018 Regional Auditions.

Three questions provided guidance in this decision-making process:

1.     What is the desire of the ACE constituency?

2.     How will it benefit students?

3.     On balance, is it a better process than currently in use?

The new solo policy was arrived at with integrity and transparency and with the belief that it successfully addresses the guiding questions.

In summary:

·      All students will prepare a 2-minute solo from the All-State Solo Repertoire List.

·      Students may use an accompanist or the provided recorded accompaniment.

·      Students will indicate at time of audition whether they are a I or II for their voice part. (This will have no impact on their score.  It will be used for informational purposes on completion of the audition process).

·      This policy will be in force for 2 years.

·      The sight-reading portion of the audition will remain unchanged.

Information regarding the process and the All-State Solo Repertoire List is contained in the slide show.  An “information only” session will be held as part of the ACE constituency meeting during All-State on Saturday, April 8 at 9AM.

The ACE Board would like to thank the Solo Repertoire Committee and those who shared their concerns and recommendations regarding this policy change.
