2018 All-State Solo Audition

posted Mar 27, 2017, 9:28 AM by Darin Shryock   [ updated Mar 27, 2017, 12:11 PM ]

On March 20, 2017 at a regularly scheduled meeting of the ACE Board of Directors, the following policy was approved for the 2018 and 2019 All-State Auditions.  It will be presented to the AMEA Board of Directors with the recommendation that it be approved for the 2017 and 2018 Regional Auditions.

Three questions provided guidance in this decision-making process:

1.     What is the desire of the ACE constituency?

2.     How will it benefit students?

3.     On balance, is it a better process than currently in use?

The new solo policy was arrived at with integrity and transparency and with the belief that it successfully addresses the guiding questions.

In summary:

·      All students will prepare a 2-minute solo from the All-State Solo Repertoire List.

·      Students may use an accompanist or the provided recorded accompaniment.

·      Students will indicate at time of audition whether they are a I or II for their voice part. (This will have no impact on their score.  It will be used for informational purposes on completion of the audition process).

·      This policy will be in force for 2 years.

·      The sight-reading portion of the audition will remain unchanged.

Information regarding the process and the All-State Solo Repertoire List is contained in the slide show.  An “information only” session will be held as part of the ACE constituency meeting during All-State on Saturday, April 8 at 9AM.

The ACE Board would like to thank the Solo Repertoire Committee and those who shared their concerns and recommendations regarding this policy change.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

posted Nov 2, 2016, 10:58 AM by Darin Shryock   [ updated Nov 2, 2016, 10:59 AM ]

Greetings ACE members:

Two years ago you received a notice similar to this one.  Two years ago many of you answered the call.  Two years ago an election was held and some fabulous people were selected to serve on the ACE board.  The term of service is two years and that term expires this spring.

Today I am giving you notice.  Today I am asking you to answer the call to serve your state, your students and the choral educators that work every day to keep our art form vibrant and thriving.  Today I call on you to nominate yourself to serve on the ACE board for the 2017-2019 term.

Tomorrow, our students will need opportunity and motivation.  Tomorrow, festivals and conferences will need to be planned.  Tomorrow, opinions will need to be shared.  Tomorrow, clinicians will need to be hired.  Tomorrow, new directors will need guidance and support.  Tomorrow, veteran directors will need inspiration and respect.  Tomorrow, the business of Arizona Choral Educators will continue to be done by energized, motivated and vibrant people like you.

Throw your hat in the ring.  If you don’t have a hat, get one and throw it in the ring.  If you can’t get one, I’ll give you one :)

Thank you for the support, respect, advice and encouragement you have provided.  I look forward to serving with you.

President, Arizona Choral Educators

Conference Performance Submissions

posted Sep 19, 2016, 1:18 PM by Darin Shryock

This is all in bold because it's important :)  I STRONGLY urge you to submit your ensembles for performance at this year's conference. Even though rejection is a possibility, your submission allows the board to create performance sessions that represent choral music in the state of Arizona.  Perfection is not possible - participation is... but only if you enter the arena.  Let someone else decide if your musical offering fits this year's conference.  Many of you do unique and amazing things every day.  This is a great opportunity to share that with the rest of us :)  The deadline is coming up quickly, so please act on this invitation.

Enjoy your students, enjoy the music you are making, and have a wonderful year :)

Conference Performance Submissions: If you are interested in having one of your ensembles perform at this year’s AMEA conference (Feb. 3-4, 2017), please submit audio recordings and supporting materials (outlined below) to Darin Shryock (ACE President) NO LATER THAN Wednesday, October 19, 2016. Notification will be made the following week.  Recordings may be emailed to dshryock@tempeunion.org or you can mail your submissions to:

Marcos de Niza HS

Attn: Darin Shryock

6000 S. Lakeshore Drive

Tempe, AZ 85283

Submissions should be 3-5 total songs. Recordings should represent your choir over the past 3 years. Please also send a brief description of your school and your program, as well as sample concert programs or a repertoire list from recent concerts.

All-State Jazz Solo Clarification

In measure 4 of the Soprano solo audition, there is a fall off.  The pdf makes it look like the flag of an eighth note, but it is indeed a fall off as noted in the other 3 parts.  Please help your students interpret this marking.

Take care and see you at auditions :)

All-State Jazz/Show

Dear Directors,

I hope this finds you well on your way to a great school year. I know that many of us have been  busy with our first weeks back. I wanted to take a moment to update you on all state jazz and show. The deadline for audition registration is this week. Please make sure you mark your calendars to get those registrations completed. Following that, our chairs will work on the auditions schedule, and we will then share it as soon as it is completed. Please remember that voice part changes are not allowed after registration. The way you register a student is the way they will be required to audition.

My chairs and I are currently working on finishing the excerpts for auditions and we will post that material soon. Once the material is posted, I will notify you through the list serve that materials are available. Please also encourage new directors in you area to join our list serve so that they can stay aware of important information from ACE throughout the year. Thank you for your continued support of ACE and all that we do.

Sincerely,

Jason Neumann

FALL FESTIVAL ANNOUNCEMENT

posted Aug 23, 2016, 9:17 AM by Darin Shryock

Hello High School Choral Directors!

I would like to take a minute of your highly limited time to encourage you to enroll your ensemble(s) in the Fall Choir Festival hosted by the Arizona Choral Educators. The festival is hosted in both the Tucson and Phoenix areas. The Tucson-area festival will be held on Thursday, October 27th at Catalina Foothills High School, and the Phoenix-area festival will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, October 26th and 27th at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. This year your choirs will get to opportunity to work with some outstanding clinicians. Dr. Ryan Holder (from Northern Arizona Univeristy) and Dr. Sharon Hansen (formerly from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee) will be adjudicating at our Tucson site, and Lori Marie Rios (College of the Canyons and past president of California ACDA) and Dr. Joshua Palkki (California State University Long Beach) will be adjudicating at our Phoenix site. If you have participated in the festival in the past you will notice a few small differences. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Scheduling is limited. Ensembles will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis. That being said, I will keep a live, in-progress schedule posted HERE so that you can see if there are viable time slots available before you register. Once you have registered you will be required to pay even if your assigned performance slot is not ideal. I will make every effort to facilitate all the ensembles and will publish a finalized schedule when registration is closed.
  • Sight Reading has changed slightly (for the better!) The sight reading exercises will be available in SSA, SA, TB, TTB, TBB, SAB, and SATB at the director’s discretion. These exercises have been provided by SightReadingFactory.com. You can go HERE and create your own, free sight reading exercises for your choir to prepare! The other change has been made in the 2-minute recap period after the first reading of the exercise. Students will now be allowed to sing during these two minutes. They may sing individually or in sections, but cannot sing the exercise all together homophonically. Directors are still not allowed to sing other than the tonic triad and starting pitches.
  • We have also aligned our adjudication process more closely with state standards and choral education goals. The new performance adjudication form will include numeric values for each of the ten evaluation criteria which will be added for a total point value, from which your rating will be determined. The sight reading adjudication form also has specific point values which will be awarded based on a detailed rubric. You can find these forms HERE if you would like to examine them further.

Registration is now open on the Arizona AMEA website HERE. The registration deadline is September, 30th but there may be very limited time slots available if you wait to register. Please read your ACE handbook (also available at the AMEA website HERE) for complete details. If you have any questions you can email me at ted.gibson@gilbertschools.net.
